Demonic Possessions

Okay, so demons possessing the body of human victims seems like something out of a demonic horror film, but it is, in fact a real belief held by religions around the world. Most of these religions offer prayers, spells, or incantations to remove these evil spirits via exorcism rituals.

I admit it is hard to believe, but there are actual recordings and documented accounts by victims and witnesses as far back as the ancient times. I have written about some documented possessions already, but I have looked into other cases of real demonic possessions that I thought I would share with you.

1) Carla Germana Cele.

Carla Germana Cele was a Christian student at St. Michael’s Mission in Natal, South Africa, in 1906. When she was sixteen years old, she made a pact with the devil. Several days later, she started to display some strange behaviour. The site of any religious icon repulsed her, she could speak several languages that she could not speak before and she became clairvoyant regarding the thoughts and histories of the people around her.

There were reports made from the nuns who attended to Cele, that she produced horrible animalistic sounds. They also stated that she levitated up to five feet into the air. Two priests were eventually brought in and performed an exorcism on Cele. During the exorcism, Cele tried to strangle one of the priests with his stole. She then began to levitate in front of one hundred and seventy people whilst the priests read the scripture. It took two days to evict the dark force from her body.

2) “Julia”

Dr Richard Gallagher, a psychiatrist and associate professor of clinical psychiatry, documented the case of a patient nicknamed “Julia” in 2008, and reported that Julia was possessed by demons. Typically, doctors think that possession is either false or a result of mental illness, so it is rare that a scientist and psychologist would acknowledge the possibility of possession.
Dr Gallager reported seeing items flying around the room, Julia levitating off the bed, speaking tongues, and explained how she knew things about people that she could not have possibly known. He went on to say:

“Periodically, in our presence, Julia would go into a trance state of a recurring nature. Mentally troubled individuals often ‘dissociate’, but Julia’s trances were accompanied by an unusual phenomenon: Out of her mouth would come various threats, taunts, and scatological language, phrases like ‘Leave her alone, you idiot,’ ‘She’s ours,’ ‘Leave, you imbecile priest,’ or just ‘Leave.’ The tone of this voice differed markedly from Julia’s own, and it varied, sometimes sounding guttural and vaguely masculine, at other points high-pitched. Most of her comments during these ‘trances’, or at the subsequent exorcism, displayed a marked contempt for anything religious or sacred.”

3) Arne Cheyenne Johnson

This case was known as the “Demon Murder Trials,” and is the first known court case in the United States where the defence attempted to prove the defendant, Arne Cheyenne Johnson, was not guilty by reason of possession.

Johnson was accused of murdering his landlord, Alan Bono, in 1981, in Connecticut. The attorney stated that Johnson’s actions showed a pattern of erratic behaviour that began when he was a child. His parents consulted with demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, stating that their son had been taunted and harassed by an unseen force for most of his life and claimed his evil-doings was a result from a demon possessing his body.

Needless to say, the judge ruled that Johnson did not commit murder through the fault of a demon possession. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to ten to twenty years in prison. He only served five.

4) David Berkowitz, AKA “Son of Sam”

New York, 1976, a city terrorised by a serial killer known as the “Son of Sam,” or the “.44 Calibre Killer.” He led the New York Police on a wild goose chase for more than a year, leaving taunting notes at the scene of the crime. He killed six people and severely injured seven others.

The killer was eventually identified as David Berkowitz, who confessed to all the shootings and claimed he was told to kill by a demon. He denied being possessed himself, but stated that the neighbour’s dog was possessed.  He claimed the dog ordered him to do the evil deed. Berkowitz admitted to being a member of a satanic cult that had orchestrated the incidents as part of a ritual murder. He was sentenced to six life sentences.

5) Michael Taylor

Michael Taylor lived in Ossett, a small town in the UK, with his wife. They were a religious couple and joined a Christian prayer group ran by Marie Robinson. Taylor’s wife accused her husband and Robinson of having an affair in 1974, which they both denied. Taylor then began to spew obscenities and acted erratic and very out of character. People began to suspect he was possessed by evil.

This behaviour lasted for months, until eventually, Taylor consulted with clergy who performed an exorcism. This lasted for a good twenty-four hours, and forty demons were exorcised from his body. However, before he left, the priest warned Taylor that the demon of murder remained in his soul.

When Taylor returned home, he brutally murdered his wife and their dog. He was found wandering the street covered in blood. He was acquitted by reason of insanity.

6) Anna Ecklund: The Earling Possession.

Anna Eckland was a fourteen year old from Earling, Iowa, who began to show signs of demonic possession. She was raised a Catholic, but her father and aunt practised witchcraft. They allegedly cursed the girl and used herbs to taint her food. She soon hated any religious artefacts, became sexually depraved, and could not enter a church. The girl underwent a successful exorcism in 1912, but her father and aunt prayed to Satan for her to suffer even more, and she became possessed by multiple entities.

Help was once again sought from the church in 1928. She stayed in a convent where a second exorcism would take place. However, her behaviour became worse. The nuns would bless her food before entering her room, but she would sense the blessing, hiss at the nuns and threw the food to the floor. She began speaking in tongues and spoke, and understood foreign languages she had not heard before. The nuns also claimed seeing her levitate and clinging to the walls. She became clairvoyant and often vomited and spat at the priests. Her eyes bulged and her body was so bloated and heavy that she almost broke the iron bed on which she lay.

The clergymen finally declared her free from demons after twenty-three days and three complete exorcism rituals.
