John Reginald Christie was a 54 year old serial killer and sexual psychopath from Notting hill, London. In 1949, Christie lived in a grotty, run down house in Notting Hill Gate, London. On the top floor of the house, lived 24 year old van driver, Timothy Evans, with his wife Beryl & infant daughter Geraldine. On the 30th November, Evans, whilst in Wales, walked into a Welsh Police station & confessed to putting his dead wife’s body down a drain at home in Notting Hill. When the home was searched, they did not only find Beryl’s body, but also the lifeless body of little Geraldine, both of whom were strangled and found in the garden. Evans later changed his story and pointed the finger towards Christie who denied any responsibility & knowledge. Evans was consequently arrested & hanged for the murder of Geraldine at Pentonville Prison on March 9th 1950.

Christie later moved from his flat & new tenants moved in. They was left to trace the origins of a foul, offensive smell & on March 24th 1953 they found the cause in a papered over cupboard, which contained the bodies of three women, Hectoria MacLennan, Cathlene Maloney & Rita Nelson. A fourth body, his wife Ethel, was found under the floorboards of the front room. Christie admitted to killing her in December 1952, & the remains of two more women, Murial Eady and Ruth Fuerst, was found in the garden. Christie admitted to murdering the women in the flat & later admitted to killing Eady & Fuerst in 1943 & 44 when he was with the police force. He was not a popular man & served a prison sentence for theft & known as a pathological liar.

On the 31st March 1953, Christie was arrested & made a detailed confession of seven murders including that of Beryl Evans but he denied killing Geraldine. Christie admitted his motives were sexual and informed the police that he had strangled one victim during intercourse. He explained how he invited women to his flat, got them partially drunk, sat them in a deck chair & rendered them unconscious with domestic gas coal. At the trial, Christie pleaded not guilty on the grounds of insanity but this was denied. The trial came to an end three days later & Christie was found guilty of murder & sentenced to death. He was hanged from the same gallows as Evans was three years earlier at Pentonville Prison July 15th 1953.
On the 18th October 1966, justice was finally served when Timothy Evans was granted a posthumous pardon.
